Beloved Cyclist “Chuey” Munkanita Beaten Unconscious and Arrested By Police

Kachusha “Chuey” Munkanita is one of the most beloved figures in the San Francisco cycling community.  He’s known internationally for his hand-made cycling caps, made and sold right here in the Mission.  And everyone, from MASH to PD Bird, know him to be a “peaceful” and “non-violent” person.  He even delivers coffee, by bike, for De La Paz Coffee Roasters—a company undeniably of peace.

So it’s with great shock and disgust that we learn of his arrest and police beating while trying to monitor SFPD’s treatment of Latinos.  A close friend of his forwarded along his story:

Thursday night/ Friday morning Chuey stopped on the side of the street in the Mission when he saw the cops having 4 Latinos lined up against a gate. He stopped to make sure the youth were being fairly treated.

The cops then asked him to cross the street, when Chuey said he couldn’t observe from across the street. They (2-3 cops) jumped him as he was hugging his bike. They wrestled him to the ground then continued to push him into the ground, twisting his arm, slamming his head into the ground. He was in jail for almost 24 hours and released after his family paid bail. They charged him with 3 felonies for assaulting 3 cops with enough force to cause grave bodily harm and  2 misdemeanors for resisting arrest.

Chuey was released on $150,000 bail and arraigned yesterday afternoon at the Superior Court of California, where he was issued a public defender.  Chuey is also faced with steep medical costs after having to visit the ER for his injuries, where doctors advised him to have a cat scan.

Currently, there is no fundraiser planned to aid in his defense, but friends are encouraging people to purchase his caps, helping support him financially in any way possible.  You can get his caps online at Mission Bicycleor MASH (who will donate all proceeds to his defense), or in person at Box Dog Bikes or Pushbike.

Update: Roaring Mouse Cycles and All Hail the Black Market are also donating their cut of Chuey caps to his legal aid.

ugh i’ve seen this guy riding around a lot

i’m heartbroken. please help if you can

THIS IS A VIDEO SHOWING MY MY FRIEND SHROUKIE’S FAMILY GET FORCED OUT OF THEIR HOUSE AT 05:00am BY THE UKBA AS SHE CRIES.

http://www.facebook.com/SaveSalehFamily?ref=stream PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE GO TO THE FACEBOOK PAGE TO SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO.

THEY MIGHT BE DEPORTED AS YOU READ THIS. I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS.

THESE PEOPLE ARE LIKELY TO GET RAPED, ATTACKED AND KILLED IN THE NAME OF ‘HONOUR’ UPON THEIR RETURN TO EGYPT.

THIS MESSAGE NEEDS TO BE CIRCULATED ASAP, THIS IS HAPPENING NOW.

I was asked to reblog this. I only made it to the 1 minute mark of the video. I rarely get triggered by things but seeing a family being torn apart is certainly one thing that I am not able to function though. I am extremely unlearned about what is happening outside of my own country but if there is help that I can provide, I want to do that.

NYPD beat homeless man in synagogue outreach centerOctober 17, 2012
The NYPD beat up a homeless man in Brooklyn last week as he resisted arrest for sleeping in a synagogue outreach center, where he had permission to stay. Surveillance video obtained by local news siteCrownHeights.info shows two officers brutally beating a shoeless and shirtless man, Ehud Halevi, who insisted he had permission to be in the center for troubled youth, ALIYA (Alternative Learning Institute for Young Adults).
Although sources confirmed with CrownHeights.info that Halevi had been sleeping in the space for a month with permission, one security guard, unaware of the arrangement, called the police. The guard later told the New York Daily News that he regretted making the call.
According to Gothamist, “[Halevi] was also pepper sprayed during the arrest, [and] was charged with assaulting a police officer, trespassing, resisting arrest and harassment. He’s currently out on bail and faces up to five years in prison for assaulting an officer.” The NYPD have yet to issue comment.

Houston police officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair Saturday inside a group home after police say the double amputee threatened the officer and aggressively waved a metal object that turned out to be a pen.

please tell me again about how the police are on “our” side?

(I don’t see it anywhere in the article, but I bet anything that the murdered man was a POC, and very probably Black at that.)

Bronx community mourns man shot dead by NYPD
September 8, 2012

Earlier today, 20-year-old Bronx Resident, Reynaldo Cuevas was shot and killed by an NYPD officer outside the bodega where he works. According to witnesses, Cuevas had tripped while attempting to escape an armed robbery inside the bodega. Immediately after, a 42nd precinct officer shot his gun, killing Cuevas, who was later dragged by the officer some 20-feet along the sidewalk.

Afterwards community members took to the streets in anger, later marching to the nearby precinct and ending the evening on the corner where Cuevas was shot.

The shooting occurred just one block away from where unarmed 19-year-old Jateik Reed was recently beaten by 42nd precinct officers.

Lakota activists pepper-sprayed in protest against predatory liquor stores
August 27, 2012

Women of the Oglala Lakota nation along with activists from Deep Green Resistance, AIM Grassroots, Native Youth Movement, Un-Occupy Albuquerque, Occupy Lincoln, and Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center took part in a march from Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge into White Clay to protest against the predatory liquor industry present there.

White Clay has a population of 14, yet 4 liquor stores in the town sell 12,500 cans of beer each day. The stores have been documented repeatedly selling to bootleggers, intoxicated people, minors, and trading beer for sexual favors.

“For over 100 years the women of the Oglala Lakota nation have been dealing with an attack on the mind body and spirit of their relatives”, says Olowan Martinez who is a main organizer of the event and resident of Pine Ridge. “The Oglala have been silenced through chemical warfare waged by the corporations who are out to exploit and make a profit off of the suffering and misery of our people. The time has come to end this suffering by any means necessary.”

Debra White Plume, a Lakota activist and resident of Pine Ridge who spoke at the event proclaimed, “A sober Indian is a dangerous Indian.  We have to send a message to Nebraska and its citizens that we are not going to tolerate business as usual. This is the Women’s Day of Peace but that peace will soon be over”.

After the march and speeches members of Deep Green Resistance locked down and blockaded the road into White Clay.

Less than a half hour after the lockdown began a police officer rolled down their window and indiscriminately pepper sprayed into a crowd.   Up to 12 people were pepper sprayed including the 10 year old son of a Lakota woman who helped organize the march.  Also, an elder Lakota woman, Helen Red Feather, reported having her leg hit by a police car in motion.  Medics with the protest treated pepper spray injuries.

At 7:39, the five activists who participated in the lock down were hauled off in a horse trailer to the Sheridan County jail in Rushville.  They have since been released on their own recognizance.

Today, justice is far from complete, since White Clay continues to enable and enact the destruction of the Oglala Lakota and the people of Pine Ridge. The continued subjugation of the Oglala Lakota of the Pine Ridge Reservation will not end as long as the liquor stores in White Clay continue to operate.

Chants of “As long as it takes!” began by those locked down and the people standing with them in the crowd at the beginning of the lockdown. The struggle continues.

When white college kids get peppersprayed it’d like a bajillion notes and a meme of casual pepperspray officer.

Can we bring attention to the fact that they peppersprayed a ten-year-old kid?

NYT has now confirmed—though they bury the fact—that the gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, indeed did not fire his weapon at cops, and both Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly lied about it, apparently.NYT:  Bloomberg and Kelly said cops “returned fire” but: “A law enforcement official said later on Friday that Mr. Johnson did not fire his weapon.”
